It’s important to remember not just those who are fighting for our country in places like Afghanistan right now, but also those brave service men and women who have contributed to previous war efforts on our behalf. As Gloucester’s MP it has been my privilege to spend time with veterans of many important conflicts, including World War Two and the Korean War. I am always struck by the modesty and honesty of these people. They never want a fuss made and always reject the label of “hero”.
But I think it’s vitally important that we show these brave people how much we appreciate their sacrifices and ensure that they receive official recognition from our country.
As the local MP I’ve had the honour of presenting hundreds of people from Gloucester with service badges, its one of the best parts of my job. But unfortunately there are still too many people who are entitled to badges and have not yet received them.
Thankfully this is starting to change. One local resident, Eileen Illingworth, has worked tirelessly to spread the word about the Veterans Badge, which is awarded to all those who have served in the Forces, and her efforts have ensured that over 50 people have now been awarded this badge. It’s great to work with someone so dedicated.
It’s also important to remember that it’s not just those on the front line who make sacrifices during conflict. For example, the “Bevin Boys”, those conscripted to carry out vital works in the mines during World War Two, are also recognised with a service medal. Similarly, last year the government introduced a badge of recognition to female war veterans who worked on the Home Front to provide food and timber during the Second World War. It was my pleasure to present one of these badges to local resident Joan Davis just last month.
If you think that you, or a friend or family member might be entitled to one of these badges please get in touch with me on 01452 311870 or visit my website www.parmjitdhanda.co.uk.
