A Shory History of Gloucester
There is
evidence of human activity in Gloucester dating back as far as 250,000 years ago, but it was the arrival of the Romans around 45AD that established Gloucester as a major city. By the end of the
first century, the Colonia of Glevum (as it was known by the Romans) was home to a fortress of 5,000 soldiers.
In 1155 Gloucester was granted a Royal Charter by Henry II. Since then it has received a number of Charters, confirming its status as a City. In the 16th century, the Abbey Church of St Peter
became a Cathedral during the Reformation under Henry VIII. More recently, the Cathedral has been used as the setting for the Harry Potter film.
